The brand and cover approach of a new series of books, each exploring a different hobby and told by an expert in that area.
I wanted to use a checkerboard pattern as it seemed to fit so well with the first two in the series (Chess and Skateboarding). Then, working on Baking and Drumming it felt like a natural part of the brand: appealing to young children but also the parent purchasers who might be looking for a book that plays on a nostalgic visual language they're familiar with.
I chose to run it down the gutter at a single square thickness: it follows around onto the spine and back cover too, so you can appreciate the checkerboard when holding the book in your hands without it being too distracting from the art when looking at the front cover alone.
The above are my initial ideas for covers: I wanted to centre around either hands or feet for each hobby: in the end it was felt these weren't commercially viable enough, but I'm still fond of them as hobby-centred covers.
